Chief Government Affairs Officer: National Association of Insurance Commissioners

Ethan Sonnichsen is the Chief Government Affairs Officer for the NAIC. He oversees the activities of the NAIC’s Washington, D.C.-based Executive Office and works with state insurance regulators to develop policy and advocacy strategies on state, federal, and international issues affecting all lines of insurance. In this capacity, he directly advises insurance Commissioners on federal and international strategy across all lines of insurance and brings his perspective and insights to domestic regulatory developments underway at the NAIC.

Sonnichsen coordinates the NAIC’s outreach to Congress, federal and international financial regulators, Governors, and state legislators and officials. He also serves as a primary liaison for the NAIC with the insurance industry and consumer stakeholders in Washington, D.C., and internationally.

Before joining the NAIC in February 2006, Sonnichsen worked on international risk management and financial reporting issues for the American Academy of Actuaries. He graduated from the University of Maryland’s University College with a B.S. in Management. He lives in Kensington, Maryland, with his wife and two children.
