NOLHGA to Celebrate under the Stars at Mission San Juan Capistrano
NOLHGA's 2006 Annual Meeting reception, "An Evening under the Stars," will take place at one of the most beautiful locations in Southern California--the Mission San Juan Capistrano. During the reception, visitors can join Mission docents on an abbreviated tour that includes the lush gardens, the beautiful Serra Chapel, and the Great Stone Church. Unfortunately, the famous return of the swallows to Capistrano won't occur until next March.
NOLHGA's Annual Meeting reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, and will feature a large buffet and hors d'oeuvres rather than a formal dinner. The Mission is a 10-minute bus ride from the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa, the site of the meeting, and buses will run frequently for guests who wish to leave the Mission earlier than 9 p.m. For more information on the Mission San Juan Capistrano, visit their Web site.
A preliminary schedule for the Annual Meeting can be found at the joint MPC meeting and Annual Meeting Web page. NOLHGA has scheduled an early close to the meeting--11:00 a.m. local time--to make it easier for attendees to plan their departures. We hope the early adjournment will enable all attendees to stay for the entire meeting and not miss out on the later presentations.
Staff Contact - Sean McKennaTreasury Department Perspectives Revealed at Legal Seminar
At NOLHGA's 14th Annual Legal Seminar in Baltimore in August, David Nason (the deputy assistant secretary for financial institutions policy for the United States Department of the Treasury) noted that the department is spending more time studying insurance regulation and the insurance marketplace than ever before, not only because of the statutory responsibilities it has been given by Congress but also due to the increasing impact insurance has on the nation's financial marketplace.
In his remarks, Nason focused on three areas: terrorism risk insurance, insurance regulation modernization, and the role of the state-based guaranty system. With respect to the guaranty system, Nason made a number of positive comments, including the observation that "while there are passionate views on virtually all aspects of the modernization debate, the viability and merit of the state guaranty system [are] rarely, if ever, called into question. This is important for Treasury to recognize as we continue to think about the complex issues in and around insurance regulation."
For a complete copy of Nason's comments, please view the Treasury Department's Web site or contact Meg Melusen ([email protected]) at NOLHGA.
Staff Contact -IAIR Board Nominations Requested
The International Association of Insurance Receivers (IAIR) is accepting nominations for members interested in serving on the IAIR Board of Directors. The term for board positions is three years, and there are five positions expiring this year. Nominees must be current IAIR members and must be willing to participate in quarterly board meetings.
IAIR seeks diverse representation from within its membership community, which includes receivers, guaranty association representatives, and industry. NOLHGA views the diverse participation in IAIR as a strength and would like to take this opportunity to encourage our members to consider serving on the IAIR board. The election will be held in December 2006, in conjunction with the IAIR annual meeting in San Antonio, Tex., and nominations are due by October 2. For additional information, or to submit a nomination, contact IAIR Executive Director Paula Keyes at [email protected].
