NOLHGA President Peter Gallanis To Retire in 2023

Peter Gallanis, who has served as NOLHGA’s President since 1999, announced this week that he plans to retire by mid-year 2023. “Peter has been a great asset—one of our greatest assets—since he joined NOLHGA,” said NOLHGA Board Chair Nancy Davenport. “When you think of the greatest challenges we’ve faced in the last 20 years, from insolvencies like ELNY and Penn Treaty to the financial crisis and the pandemic, we wouldn't have weathered those storms as successfully as we did without his leadership. It’s hard to think of NOLHGA without thinking of Peter. That said, our Board knows that the NOLHGA staff is very capable and talented, and that our team will continue to accomplish outstanding work under Peter’s successor.”

According to Ms. Davenport, the NOLHGA Board is commencing its search to identify a new NOLHGA President. That process will involve an executive search firm as well as a search committee (made up of NOLHGA Board members, guaranty association Executive Directors, and guaranty association member company representatives) that will work with the firm, under the Board’s direction, to conduct a preliminary screening of candidates.

Peter became President of NOLHGA in April 1999. In addition to his work on a large number of insolvency task forces and committees, he has served as the public face of NOLHGA, testifying before Congress, government agencies, and international organizations such as the International Association of Insurance Supervisors and the Financial Stability Board. He has also worked with groups such as the ACLI and NAIC on insolvency matters and other issues affecting the guaranty system; attended member guaranty association meetings to brief the associations on NOLHGA’s activities; and spoken on insolvency resolution issues at countless conferences and meetings.

Before joining NOLHGA, Peter was the Special Deputy Insurance Receiver for the State of Illinois, where he managed the administration of approximately 80 insolvent domestic insurers of all types. Prior to that, he was a partner in a large law firm in Chicago, where he was in private practice from 1978 through 1991. He also served as Adjunct Professor of Insurance Law at the DePaul University College of Law in Chicago from 1992 until he joined NOLHGA in 1999.

“I am beyond grateful for the chance to have served this wonderful organization for nearly 24 years,” he said. “I could not be prouder of the work that we have accomplished together in that time to protect insurance consumers and the insurance marketplace.”

January 2023 MPC Meeting Website Goes Live

The website for NOLHGA’s January 2023 MPC meeting in Clearwater Beach, Florida, has gone live. The site offers both in-person and online registration options for the meeting, which will be held on January 26 and 27. An agenda for the meeting will be released in December, but we expect the meeting to end by noon on January 27.

The meeting website also offers online hotel reservations for the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa, the host hotel for the meeting. The deadline for reservations at the NOLHGA rate of $255/night (plus a $10 daily resort fee) is January 3, 2023.
