
MPC Meets in Salt Lake City
The Members’ Participation Council (MPC) conducted a meeting on October 25, 2023, in Salt Lake City and online. In addition to the insolvency task force report below, the MPC General Session featured:
- Comments from NOLHGA Chair Nancy Davenport on her year as NOLHGA Chair.
- The MPC Chair Report, during which MPC Chair Margaret Sperry (Rhode Island) reported that Mark Femal (Strohm Ballweg) would be retiring but would continue work on his NOLHGA projects as an independent contractor.
- The NOLHGA Management Report, which featured an update on Public Policy and the Education Project, including activities at the NAIC and international developments, by NOLHGA President Katie Wade and a review of NOLHGA’s progress on several of its organizational goals by NOLHGA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Heard.
- Looking Ahead – Moving Forward, an update on NOLHGA and the MPC’s plans for educational sessions in 2024 from MPC Chair Margaret Sperry and NOLHGA President Katie Wade.
- An update on the activities of the Security Advisory Committee by Co-Chair Candie Kinch (Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming).
- An update on the status of Friday Health (a health insurance group undergoing severe financial difficulties, with operating subsidiaries in Colorado, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas) by Bart Boles (Texas).
- A closed-session (affected guaranty associations only) presentation by the Global Bankers Insurance Group (North Carolina) Task Force.
Task Force Chair Ted Lewis (Utah) and Legal Counsel Kirsten Byrd (Husch Blackwell LLP) reviewed the status of the company, which is one of many subsidiaries of Bright Health Group (Delaware). Bright Health (Colorado) withdrew from the health insurance market at the end of 2022, and the company is not currently in supervision or rehabilitation. On June 30, 2023, Bright Health Group announced it had reached a definitive agreement with Molina Healthcare, Inc., to sell its California Medicare Advantage business for $600 million.
