Legal Seminar Will Feature Former General Counsel for the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission
Gary J. Cohen, a partner with Sidley Austin's Corporate Group, has agreed to speak at NOLHGA's 19th Annual Legal Seminar in July.
From 2010 to 2011, Cohen served as General Counsel to the 10-member Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, which was created by Congress to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." At the seminar, Cohen will participate in a panel discussion on how the financial crisis developed and how the Dodd-Frank Act will affect insurers and other participants in the financial services marketplace.
Cohen's practice focuses on corporate law with an emphasis on investment advisory matters, private equity and real estate offerings, mezzanine debt transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate matters. Cohen received his undergraduate degree from Polytechnic University and his law degree from Boalt Hall at the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated first in his class. Following law school, Cohen was a law clerk for the Honorable Wilfred Feinberg, United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit.
NOLHGA's 2011 Legal Seminar will be held on July 21 and 22 in San Francisco, with an MPC meeting scheduled for July 19 and 20. Both meetings will take place at San Francisco's Ritz-Carlton on Nob Hill. To register or learn more about NOLHGA's 2011 Legal Seminar, visit the seminar's Web page.
Staff Contact - Consumers United Insurance Company (Delaware)Two Court Filings in Consumers United Matter
States affected by the liquidation of Consumers United Insurance Company should be aware of two recent filings in the Delaware liquidation court. On May 11, 2011, the receiver, as a step in winding down the estate, filed a petition seeking court approval to destroy most of CUIC's records. Affected guaranty associations should have received a copy of the filing this week from the receiver. A hearing on this issue has not yet been scheduled; however, any guaranty associations objecting to the records destruction should be prepared to file their objections once the hearing date is known.
Additionally, the receiver filed a petition on May 11 seeking approval of an agreement reached with the federal government, under which the government agrees to release Consumers United from any liability under the federal super-priority statute.
Contact Meg Melusen at NOLHGA for a copy of either of these filings.
