Fred Barnes To Speak at NOLHGA Annual Meeting

Fred Barnes, co-host of FOX News Channel’s "The Beltway Boys" and a former panelist on "The McLaughlin Group," will be a guest speaker at NOLHGA's 19th Annual Meeting. Barnes, executive editor of The Weekly Standard and a well-known political commentator, will give meeting attendees an insider's look at the political landscape in Washington and the changes that could result from the 2002 congressional elections, which will be held just a few days after the meeting.

The Annual Meeting, which will take place October 31 and November 1, 2002, at the Monarch Hotel in Washington, D.C., will also feature presentations on topics such as optional federal chartering, the NAIC's efforts in modernizing state regulation of insurance, and the outlook for the nation's economy. A meeting of the Members' Participation Council will precede the Annual Meeting on October 30. Information on other speakers and details about NOLHGA’s 19th Annual Meeting will be available in the coming weeks.

Legal Seminar Phone Number Correction

The Legal Seminar brochure (mailed last week) and some versions of the June 14 issue of the NOLHGA Wire listed the wrong reservation number for the Drake Hotel, site of the upcoming MPC meeting and NOLHGA’s 11th Annual Legal Seminar. The correct number is 312.787.2200, and it has been corrected on the on-line version of the Wire and on the Legal Seminar Web page (http://www.nolhga.com/meetings/legal/2002/main.html). The Drake Hotel reports that guest rooms for the week and weekend of the NOLHGA Legal Seminar are filling up quickly and advises that attendees make their reservations soon.

Funds Received from United Teacher Associates

NOLHGA has received approximately $140,000 from United Teacher Associates (the former TPA for the guaranty associations), representing funds for uncashed checks funded by the guaranty associations and miscellaneous receipts for such items as claim overpayments, duplicate payments, etc. With this payment, all activity with United Teacher Associates should now be completed. NOLHGA anticipates disbursing the funds to applicable guaranty associations within the next two weeks. Payments will be made via check and will be attached to reports containing details of outstanding checks, claim information, etc.

Court Approves $12 Million Settlement of Reinsurance Claims

On June 11, 2002, the Illinois liquidation court entered an order approving a $12 million settlement of reinsurance claims in favor of the Inter-American estate. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, the funds are to be wired to the Inter-American estate no later than July 15. This settlement brings to a close the litigation and appeal of a judgment against the last of a series of reinsurers against whom the liquidator has obtained reinsurance recoveries. It also marks the end of the last significant litigation involving the Inter-American estate.

NOLHGA Site's "State Information" Section Upgraded

The "State Information" section of the NOLHGA Web site (http://www.nolhga.com/stateinformation/main.cfm) has undergone a significant upgrade. Users can now view separate pages for each guaranty association's laws and provisions. Each page features contact information for the guaranty association and allows users to select the laws and provisions (liability limits, covered policies, etc.) they wish to view; users can also generate a report with some or all of the state's guaranty association laws and provisions.

The "State Information" section still allows users to view guaranty association laws and provisions by topic; for example, users can generate a report showing the liability limits of all 52 guaranty associations. In addition, the section offers users a link to the contact information for all guaranty associations.
