Legal Seminar to Feature Healthcare Discussion
The future of healthcare in the United States has dominated headlines since the November elections, and NOLHGA’s 2017 Legal Seminar will present a panel discussion of recent developments in the health insurance industry, including a wide range of issues touching on the current state of the health insurance marketplace, the implications of possible changes to (or repeal of) the ACA, rising costs, and other challenges facing companies. The following panelists are confirmed, and the discussion will be moderated by Susan Voss of the American Enterprise Group.
• David O. Meltzer, professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, is Chief of the Section of Hospital Medicine, Director of the Center for Health and the Social Sciences, and Chair of the Committee on Clinical and Translational Science. He also serves as affiliated faculty at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and the Department of Economics. Meltzer’s research explores problems in health economics and public policy with a focus on the theoretical foundations of medical cost-effectiveness analysis and the cost and quality of hospital care. Meltzer received his MD and PhD in economics from the University of Chicago and completed his residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
• Keith Passwater is the Senior Vice President of Corporate Finance & Chief Actuary at Anthem. In this role, he guides the enterprise Budgeting, Forecasting, Reserving, and Clinical Finance teams. Since joining Anthem, Passwater has held positions in the company with oversight for pricing, financial analysis, and informatics. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science from Ball State University and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, in which he chairs the Academy's Committee on Qualifications.
• JoAnn C. Volk is the Senior Research Fellow and Project Director at the Georgetown University Center on Health Insurance Reforms. Volk directs research, authors papers, and provides technical assistance and training on private insurance reform issues as they affect consumers, including implementation of health insurance marketplaces and the insurance market rules under the Affordable Care Act. Prior to joining Georgetown, Volk managed healthcare policy for the AFL-CIO. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, with a concentration in health policy.
NOLHGA’s 25th Legal Seminar will take place on July 20–21 at the Ritz-Carlton, Chicago. Attendees can register for the meeting and make hotel reservations through the Seminar website. The registration fee for the Seminar is $895, and there is a $50 early bird discount for those who register by June 16. The seminar will be held in conjunction with an MPC meeting on July 19, and there is no registration fee for the MPC meeting.
