Former Ohio Insurance Director to Speak at Legal Seminar

Lee Covington, former director of the Ohio Department of Insurance, has agreed to speak at NOLHGA's 12th Annual Legal Seminar in August. Covington will discuss solvency regulation issues, causes of insurer insolvency, and how corporate governance issues--including those addressed in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act--might affect insurer solvency.

Even before Sarbanes-Oxley, Covington implemented a new risk-assessment financial examination process in Ohio that focused on corporate governance and risk management issues; streamlined the process for well-managed, financially sound companies; and created greater scrutiny for at-risk companies. During his tenure with the Ohio Department, Covington achieved an unprecedented $260 million in early access payments to creditors and policyholders in conjunction with implementing progressive strategies to coordinate with the guaranty funds and an aggressive plan to close liquidation estates. Covington is now based in Washington, D.C., with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

NOLHGA's Legal Seminar will take place on August 21 and 22, 2003, at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco and will be held in conjunction with the MPC meeting scheduled for August 19 and 20. Information on both meetings can be found at the joint meeting Web page. We encourage you to register for one or both meetings (separate registration is required) as soon as possible. The deadline for Legal Seminar registration is July 14, and the deadline for hotel reservations and MPC meeting registration is July 25.
