Petition for Liquidation Filed

Medical Savings Insurance Company, an Indiana-domiciled insurer that wrote primarily high-deductible health business, was placed into rehabilitation on December 1, 2008. On January 23, 2009, the Rehabilitator for Medical Savings filed a Verified Petition for Liquidation seeking a Liquidation Order and declaration of insolvency. He also filed recommendations concerning liquidation procedures, claims, and notices. A hearing on the petition and proposed liquidation procedures is scheduled for February 25.

Insurance Reform Summit Scheduled for March

The Networks Financial Institute at Indiana State University, Indianapolis, will hold its Sixth Annual Insurance Reform Summit in March. The summit will feature representatives from the insurance industry, NOLHGA, NCIGF, NAIC, Congress, and academia.

Scheduled speakers include:

- U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean (D-Ill.), a member of the House Financial Services Committee and Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government Sponsored Enterprises
- Therese Vaughan, CEO of the NAIC
- Peter Gallanis, President of NOLHGA
- Roger Schmelzer, President of NCIGF
- Martin Grace, Associate Director and Research Associate of the Center for Risk Management and Insurance Research at Georgia State University
- Scott Harrington, Professor of Health Care Management and Insurance and Risk at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Former NC Insurance Commissioner Jim Long Passes Away

Former North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Jim Long died on February 2, 2009, 12 days after suffering a stroke. Long, who had been in a coma since the stroke, was 68.

Long served as North Carolina's Insurance Commissioner from 1985 to 2009 and also served as President of the NAIC in 1991. In 2008, Long received the NAIC's inaugural President's Award for Distinguished NAIC Member Leadership.
