Legal Seminar Website & Registration Now Available

The website for NOLHGA’s 25th Legal Seminar, which will take place on July 20–21, 2017, at the Ritz-Carlton, Chicago, is now live. The site features online registration and hotel reservations as well as other meeting information.

The registration fee for the seminar is $895, and there is a $50 early bird discount for those who register by June 16. The seminar will be held in conjunction with an MPC meeting on July 19; there is no registration fee for the MPC meeting.

NOLHGA has secured a room rate for this meeting of $265/night plus tax (single/double) at the Ritz-Carlton. Reservations can be made through the meeting website or by contacting the hotel at 312.266.1000 and requesting the NOLHGA rate. MPC Meets in Louisville

The Members’ Participation Council (MPC) met in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 20–21, 2017. The Lincoln Memorial/Memorial Service Life Insurance Companies (Texas) and Penn Treaty Network America/American Network Insurance Companies (Pennsylvania) Task Forces held closed-session meetings, and the MPC Executive Committee, MPC Health CO-OP Task Force, and Accounting Issues Committee met as well. The Administrators Education Steering Committee conducted three educational sessions: (1) Assessments: Assessable Premium Issues, Assessment Invoices & Electronic Assessment Payment Options by Candie Kinch (Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming) and Janis Potter (Illinois); (2) Challenges in LTC Administration by Moderator Bart Boles (Texas), Sharon Reed (Senior Vice President, Insurance Operations with Penn Treaty), Gina Besz (Director, Claims and Process Engineering with Penn Treaty), Aaron C. Ball (Vice President, LTC Business Leader with New York Life Insurance Company), and Peter Lucas (Chief Executive Officer of TriPlus Services, Inc.); and (3) Information Technology Update by Dan Hicks (NOLHGA).

In addition to the task force reports below, the General Session featured an update on the activities of the Security Advisory Committee by Committee Chair Candie Kinch (Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming). NOLHGA President Peter Gallanis provided the President’s Report, and MPC Chair Pamela E. Olsen, Esq., briefed attendees on MPC Executive Committee activity.

Task Force Chair Jack Falkenbach (Delaware) and Legal Counsel Kevin Griffith (Faegre Baker Daniels) reviewed GABC’s 2016 financials and the company’s plans for 2017.

Task Force Chair Tad Rhodes (Oklahoma) reported that the task force is considering a proposal to assume most of the company’s remaining policies.

Jane Lopp Passes Away

Jane Lopp, longtime member of the Board of the Montana Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association, died on April 21, 2017. She was 73. An appreciation of her many accomplishments can be found here.

Texas Insurance Commissioner Mattax Passes Away

Texas Insurance Commissioner and NAIC Secretary-Treasurer David Mattax, who spoke at NOLHGA’s 2016 Annual Meeting in Dallas, died on April 13, 2017, after a battle with cancer. He was 60.
