D.C. Insurance Commissioner Lawrence Mirel to Speak at Legal Seminar

Lawrence H. Mirel, Commissioner of the Washington, D.C., Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation, has agreed to speak at NOLHGA's 12th Annual Legal Seminar, which will be held August 21-22, 2003, at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

Commissioner Mirel has headed the D.C. department since 1999. Among his many responsibilities, Commissioner Mirel co-chairs the NAIC's Improvements to State-Based Systems Working Group and serves as Vice Chair of the NAIC/Industry Liaison Committee. At the NOLHGA Legal Seminar, he is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion about the effects of class-action litigation on the insurance industry. In particular, Commissioner Mirel will provide a regulatory perspective on the consequences of having judges and juries ruling on complex insurance matters in nationwide class-action cases that have targeted large insurance companies as defendants. Reservation Period for May MPC Meeting Ends Today; Revised Schedule Posted

The cut-off date for hotel reservations for the next MPC meeting, which will be held May 19-21, 2003, at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah, is April 25. Reservations will still be accepted after today, space permitting, but the Grand America cannot guarantee that the NOLHGA room rates ($189 for a single, $199 for a double) will be available.

Attendees wishing to reserve their rooms can find contact information for the Grand America at the MPC meeting Web page. The page also contains general meeting information and on-line meeting registration. Anyone planning to attend the meeting who has not yet registered is encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

A revised meeting and general session schedule has also been posted on the MPC meeting Web page (in the "Meeting Info" section). The new schedule reflects the addition of a report on the TPA Survey Project to the general session.
