Legal Seminar Schedule Modified

The schedule for NOLHGA’s 13th Annual Legal Seminar has been slightly modified to accommodate the addition of keynote speaker Senator Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah).

The seminar, which will be held at the Stein Eriksen Lodge in Park City, Utah, on August 18–19, 2005, was originally scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday (August 18). Thursday’s breakfast will now begin at 7:15 a.m., and the program will begin at 8:00 a.m. instead of 8:15 a.m. The luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m., and the program will resume at 1:30 p.m. The revised schedule and other meeting information are available on the joint Legal Seminar/MPC meeting Web page.

Annual Meeting to Feature GA Board Member Forum

NOLHGA's 22nd Annual Meeting will feature a panel of state guaranty association board members discussing pressing issues facing association boards across the country. Possible topics for discussion include administrator evaluation, corporate governance, a guaranty association board's relationship with NOLHGA, and company expectations of the board. The board member forum is scheduled for October 26.

The panel will consist of moderator Christopher L. Chandler, vice president, government affairs, for Prudential Insurance Company of America; Alexis L. Berg, vice president and general counsel for Colonial Penn Life Insurance Company; Stephen E. Rahn, vice president of The Lincoln National Life Insurance Company; and Frank A. Sutherland Jr., vice president and insurance counsel for Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company. The members of the panel are still deciding on which topics to address, and suggestions are welcome. NOLHGA's 22nd Annual Meeting will be held October 25 and 26, 2005, at the Westin Resort, Hilton Head Island in Hilton Head, S.C. A Web page for the Annual Meeting is now available. The meeting Web page includes hotel information, online registration, a preliminary schedule, and other meeting information. It will be updated frequently in the coming months.

Special Meeting on NAIC Receivership Model Set for August 17

The NAIC's Financial Condition (E) Committee has scheduled a special meeting for August 17, 2005, to continue discussions concerning the proposed new Receivership Model. The meeting will be conducted via teleconference; it is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. EDT (1:30 p.m. CDT) and to last for approximately two hours. According to NAIC staff, the purpose of the meeting is for the committee to consider further the written comments that have been submitted by interested parties and to decide on its next course of action. NAIC staff will be distributing a discussion outline for the call within the next few days.

This meeting follows a two-day, in-person session that was held in Chicago on August 2 and 3. The first day of that session was open for comments by interested parties, and the second day was a closed session for committee deliberations. During the open session, comments were presented by NOLHGA, NCIGF, AIA, PCI, RAA, State Farm, and various other industry and interested regulator/receiver representatives. Written comments submitted by interested parties are posted on the NAIC Web site.

The August 17 conference call is open to all interested parties, though NAIC staff has indicated in the call notice that participation by interested parties in the discussion will be limited.
