MPC Meets in Clearwater Beach

The Members’ Participation Council (MPC) conducted a meeting on January 26–27, 2023, in Clearwater Beach, Florida, and online. The MPC General Session featured:

• Closed-session (affected guaranty associations only) presentations by the task forces for Global Bankers Insurance Group (North Carolina), North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company (North Carolina), Penn Treaty Network America/American Network Insurance Companies (Pennsylvania), and Senior Health Insurance Company of Pennsylvania (SHIP).
  
• Comments from NOLHGA Chair Nancy Davenport.
  
• The MPC Chair Report, during which MPC Chair Margaret Sperry (Rhode Island) updated attendees on the MPC Executive Committee meeting held earlier that day. The meeting included updates on MPC and MPC Executive Committee meeting planning; notice of a survey that will be distributed to member associations to obtain their input on the format of future MPC meetings; a report from Business Continuity Plan Subgroup Chair Bart Boles (Texas) on the subgroup’s activities; the appointment of Tom Sullivan (Iowa) to serve on the MPC Chair Preference Poll Committee; and reports from Executive Committee members on feedback they’d received as part of the GA Outreach Program. Ms. Sperry also reported on the appointment of Allan Patek (Wisconsin) to serve as Chair of the National States Insurance Company Task Force.
  
• The NOLHGA Management Report, presented by NOLHGA President Peter Gallanis and NOLHGA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Heard.
  
• A report on the activities of the Coverage/Claims Committee by Committee Chair John Colpean (Michigan), Bill Fisher (Massachusetts), and Bill O’Sullivan (NOLHGA).
  
• An overview of the Moody’s interest rate adjustment by Mike Heard (NOLHGA), Peter Inoue (Hawaii), Keith Sheridan (NOLHGA), and Joel Glover (Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath).
  
• An update on the Security Advisory Committee from Committee Member Bart Boles (Texas).

The MPC meeting also featured:

• Meetings of the MPC Executive Committee, Administrators Education Steering Committee, and MPC Business Continuity Plan Subgroup.
  
• A panel discussion entitled Inside the Mind of a GA Board Member (sponsored by the Administrators Education Steering Committee) featuring moderator Barry Miller (Delaware) and panelists Rich Bowman (New York Life Insurance Company), Beth Byrne (Voya Financial), and Bryan Newcombe (Banner Life Insurance Company).

Estrada Promoted to Director of Finance & Controller

NOLHGA is pleased to announce that Gus Estrada has been promoted to Director of Finance & Controller in recognition of the many valuable contributions he has made to the organization over the past 21 years, and to acknowledge the new responsibilities he will take on in the near future. In his new role, he will continue his day-to-day responsibilities as NOLHGA’s Controller.
