What Is NOLHGA?

The National Organization of Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Associations (NOLHGA) is an association made up of the life and health insurance guaranty associations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Guaranty associations protect policyholders when an insurance company fails (also known as an “insolvency” or “liquidation”). The guaranty associations act as a safety net for insurance consumers across America, ensuring they continue to receive coverage (up to state-defined limits) even if their insurer fails.

Established in 1983 to coordinate efforts among the state guaranty associations as they protect policyholders during insolvencies. NOLHGA usually assists its member guaranty associations when an insurance company failure affects policyholders in many states.

NOLHGA’s Mission

To support its member guaranty associations in protecting policyholders in insolvencies, and in responding to external developments so as to promote the values and interests of the life and health insurance guaranty system.

State guaranty associations reduce costs by pooling resources in the NOLHGA task force. Instead of each association hiring its own legal and financial experts, the NOLHGA task force uses a single team, saving money. This coordinated effort also speeds up resolution and claims payments.
