Comic Books & Super Heroes at the Legal Seminar
James E. Daily and Ryan M. Davidson will tackle the ethics portion of NOLHGA's Legal Seminar program in their own unique format, using illustrations from comic books and discussing ethical issues raised by superhero attorneys such as Daredevil, She-Hulk, and Manhunter.
Daily and Davidson are the co-authors of the blog Law and the Multiverse, which has been featured in The New York Times, NPR's All Things Considered, The American Bar Association Journal, and other worldwide media. Their first book, The Law of Superheroes, is forthcoming in October 2012 from Gotham Books. By day, Daily is a research associate for the Stanford University Hoover Institution's Project on Commercializing Innovation. Since 2011 he has also worked as an intellectual property litigation consultant. Davidson is an attorney licensed in Indiana and a graduate of Notre Dame Law School. He practices in Fort Wayne, mostly in insurance law.

The New York Liquidation Bureau (NYLB) recently mailed a letter to all ELNY payees notifying them of the receivership court's April 16, 2012, order approving the Restructuring Plan. The mailing included the Notice of Entry of Decision and Order filed with the court.
In other ELNY news, the Hardship Fund established by a consortium of life insurance companies for ELNY payees who will receive benefit reductions mailed a letter to all such payees informing them that the Fund is being administered by JAMS, a leading provider of alternative dispute resolution services. The letter, which is posted on the Hardship Fund Web site, also contains some general information about the application process, which has not been finalized.

The Stage 1 ballot for the 2012 MPC Chair Preference Poll was mailed to all guaranty association administrators on May 15, 2012. The ballot is due by June 29, and instructions on completing it were included with the ballot. The Illinois Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association and the Illinois Health Maintenance Organization Guaranty Association ("the Associations") are seeking a well-qualified candidate to fill the position of Executive Director of the Associations. The Associations are nonprofit insurance industry-supported organizations that handle and pay, pursuant to statute, insurance claims of Illinois residents if their life, health, or annuity insurer or health maintenance organization becomes insolvent.
This is the senior staff position for the Associations with direct reporting responsibility to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is responsible for supervising staff and carrying out the duties of the Associations and maintaining adequate professional staffing during times of varying work activity levels. Ability to effectively coordinate activities with other state guaranty associations through a national organization, with insurance receivers and regulators is essential. Some travel is required. Offices are located in Rosemont, Illinois.
The candidate must possess substantial insurance and management experience in an insurance company or related setting such as regulatory, legal, or consulting. Desired, but not required, is a background in law or accounting. Prior experience with an insurance guaranty association or in a receivership setting is a plus.
