American Life Assurance Corporation (Ala.)
Former Shareholder Appeals Closing Order
On July 23, 2004, ALAC's former shareholder, R. K. Hunter, filed a notice with the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals challenging the trial court's June 18 order approving final distributions, dissolution of the company, and closing of the ALAC estate. The basis for the appeal, as stated in the notice, is Mr. Hunter's ongoing objection to the court's denial of broad-scale discovery in advance of the closing hearing. Mr. Hunter previously challenged the trial court's denial of discovery by filing petitions with the Court of Civil Appeals and the Alabama Supreme Court just days before the final hearing on the petition to close the estate. Both courts denied Mr. Hunter's petitions.
Notwithstanding these rulings, Mr. Hunter has brought the issue once again before the Court of Civil Appeals. The appeal notice indicates that the trial record and transcript have been requested and are being prepared. No further action has yet been taken with respect to the appeal.

Registration brochures for NOLHGA's 21st Annual Meeting, which will be held October 26-27, 2004, at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nev., were recently mailed out to prospective attendees. The brochure contains a preliminary meeting schedule, hotel information, biographies of some meeting speakers, and a registration form. If you have not received a brochure by the end of next week and would like one mailed to you, please contact De Gadd at [email protected] or 703.787.4121.
In other meeting news, the Web page for the Annual Meeting and the MPC meeting on October 25 should go live early next week. The meeting page features all the information in the registration brochure as well as additional meeting details and speaker biographies. An e-mail with a direct link to the page will be sent next week; the site will also be the Featured Event in the "Events" section of NOLHGA's Web site, which is accessible through the site homepage.
The meeting Web page will allow attendees to pay their annual meeting registration fees online--the first time NOLHGA has been able to offer this service to our members. Attendees can pay with a credit card after they register; payment by check is also accepted along with the completed form from the registration brochure or a printout of the online registration form. Both the online and brochure registration forms allow attendees to register for the Annual Meeting, the MPC meeting, or both events.
